This Austrian Standard defines characteristic energy indexes for buildings, particularly in the field of net energy, final energy and the resultant quantities derived. Characteristic energy indexes are used to compare similar buildings with regard to their energy demand and, therefore, to be able to evaluate them. Furthermore, possibilities are presented how to standardize characteristic energy consumption indexes in order to compare them with characteristic energy demand indexes. Characteristic energy indexes reflecting process energies are not dealt with by this Standard.
