Diese ÖVE/ÖNORM spezifiziert Einzelheiten für die Prüfung mit dem Glühdraht, die als Brennbarkeitsprüfung zur Bestimmung der Glühdrahtentzündungstemperatur (GWIT) an Prüflingen aus festen elektrischen Isolierstoffen oder anderen festen Werkstoffen ausgeführt wird. Der GWIT ist die Temperatur, welche um 25 K (bzw. 30 K) höher liegt als die nach dem hier genormten Verfahren angewendete maximale Prüftemperatur, bei der ein geprüftes Material sich nicht entzündet, oder im Falle dessen andauernder und kontinuierlicher Verbrennung mit Flammenerscheinung jedes einzelne Auftreten von Entflammung nicht länger als 5 s anhält, und der Prüfling dabei nicht völlig verzehrt wurde. Dieses Prüfverfahren stellt eine Materialprüfung dar, welche an einer Serie von standardisierten Prüflingen durchgeführt wird.
