Diese Internationale Norm gilt für Fehlerstrom-Schutzschalter ohne eingebauten Überstromschutz (im Folgenden als RCCBs bezeichnet), deren Funktion von der Netzspannung unabhängig oder abhängig ist, zum Einsatz in Hausinstallationen und ähnlichen Anwendungen mit Bemessungsspannungen nicht über 440 V Wechselspannung und Bemessungsströmen nicht über 125 A für feste Installation, die in erster Linie zum Schutz gegen gefährliche Körperströme bestimmt sind. Diese Geräte sind zum Schutz von Personen bei indirektem Berühren bestimmt, wobei die leitfähigen berührbaren Teile der Installation an einem geeigneten Erdanschluss angeschlossen sind. Sie können verwendet werden, um Schutz gegen Brandgefahren infolge von länger andauernden Erdfehlerströmen ohne Ansprechen der Überstromschutzeinrichtung vorzusehen.
