Dieser Teil von IEC 60793 gilt für Lichtwellenleiter der Kategorien A1a, A1b und A1d. Diese Fasern werden in Nachrichtenübertragungseinrichtungen und Lichtwellenleiterkabeln eingesetzt oder können deren Bestandteil sein. Die Kategorie A1a wird für 50/125-µm-Gradientenprofilfasern eingesetzt. Für die Kategorien A1a.1, A1a.2 und A1a.3 sind drei Bandbreitenklassen festgelegt. Für jede dieser Bandbreitenklassen sind zwei Stufen von Makrokrümmungsverlustleistungen festgelegt, die durch Suffix "a" oder "b" gekennzeichnet sind. Für die bisher üblichen Makrokrümmungsverlustleistungen wird das Suffix "a" verwendet. Mit Suffix "b" sind diejenigen gekennzeichnet, die verbesserte Makrokrümmungsverlustleistungen (d. h. geringere Dämpfung) aufweisen.
