The present Austrian Standard specifies requirements for and the design of signs used for cross country tracks and winter hiking trails. Furthermore, it represents the basis for the classification of cross country tracks in different levels of difficulty as well as for marking and labelling of cross country tracks and winter hiking trails. At present, a classification of cross country tracks and winter hiking trails is not scheduled in the present ÖNORM (see 6.2). The specifications of this ÖNORM do not cover areas where the road traffic regulations are applicable or which concern occupational safety, transport of dangerous goods or fire protection For better emphasis within wide-area guiding systems, other writing systems or coloured background may be used for indications if this supports the orientation of the viewer and does not affect the legibility of the information. Crossed out symbols representing prohibition signs shall not impede the identification of these symbols.
