Dieser Teil von ISO 8501 legt eine Reihe von Vorbereitungsgraden von Stahloberflächen nach Entfernen von wasserlöslichen Verunreinigungen; Rost und Beschichtungen sowie anderen artfremden Verunreinigungen durch Hochdruck-Wasserstrahlen fest. Die einzelnen Grade sind durch Beschreibungen und photographische Vergleichsmuster definiert, wobei jedes Vergleichsmuster ein repräsentatives Beispiel für den Bereich darstellt, der von der Beschreibung erfasst wird. Zusätzlich legt diese Norm sowohl Ausgangszustände als auch Grade für Flugrostbildung nach dem Reinigen fest, die gleichfalls durch Beschreibungen und repräsentative photographische Beispiele definiert sind.
