In diesem Teil der Norm ist das Verfahren für die Prüfung von Härteprüfmaschinen zur Bestimmung der Brinellhärte nach EN ISO 6506-1 festgelegt. Es wird ein direktes Prüfverfahren zur Prüfung der Hauptfunktionen der Härteprüfmaschine und ein indirektes Prüfverfahren zur Ermittlung der Gesamtabweichung der Härteprüfmaschine festgelegt. Wird eine Härteprüfmaschine auch für andere Härteprüfverfahren verwendet, muß sie unabhängig für jedes Verfahren geprüft werden. Tragbare Härteprüfmaschinen müssen den Anforderungen dieser Norm entsprechen, jedoch ist dafür die unter 6.1a) genannte Bezeichnung "Ortsänderung" nicht zutreffend.
