Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Emissions-Schalldruckpegel von Maschinen oder Geräten am Arbeitsplatz und an anderen, sich in der Nähe befindenden, festgelegten Orten unmittelbar am Einsatzort dieser Maschinen oder Geräte (in situ) fest. Ein Arbeitsplatz wird von einer Bedienungs-person eingenommen; er kann sich frei in dem Raum befinden, in dem die untersuchte Quelle betrieben wird, oder in einer Kabine, die fest mit der untersuchten Quelle verbunden ist, oder in einem von der
untersuchten Quelle entfernt liegenden Bedienerstand. Einer oder mehrere der festgelegten Orte können in der Umgebung des Arbeitsplatzes oder im Umfeld einer bedienten oder unbeaufsichtigt betriebenen Maschine liegen. Derartige Orte werden gelegentlich als "Nachbararbeitsplätze" bezeichnet.
