Dieser Teil der EN 573 beschreibt ein numerisches System mit vier Ziffern zur Bezeichnung von Aluminium und Aluminium-Knetlegierungen. Es entspricht der von der Aluminium Association, Washington DC (USA) ausgesprochenen Empfehlung vom 15. Dezember 1970 für ein Internationales Bezeichnungssystem für Knetwerkstoffe aus Aluminium und Aluminiumlegierungen. Diese Norm gilt für Produkte aus Knetwerkstoffen und für das entsprechende Vormaterial (z. B. Walz- und Preßbarren oder Knetvormaterial für Schmiedestücke). Als Alternative hierzu wird ein auf den chemischen Symbolen basierendes Bezeichnungssystem in Teil 2 der EN 573 beschrieben.
