Diese Norm legt die mechanischen Eigenschaften für Bleche, Bänder und Platten aus Aluminium und Aluminium-Knetlegierungen fest, die für allgemeine Verwendungszwecke bestimmt sind. Sie gilt für flachgewalzte Erzeugnisse. Sie gilt nicht für Vorwalzbänder, Spezialprodukte wie z. B. rollgeformte, geprägte oder lackierte Bänder und Bleche, oder Produkte, die für Spezialanwendungen wie beispielsweise Luft- und Raumfahrt, Getränkedosen, Wärmetauscher eingesetzt werden. Diese werden in gesonderen Europäischen Normen behandelt. Die Grenzen für die Legierungsbestandteile dieser Werkstoffe sind in EN 573-3 angegeben. Für alle Legierungen, die nach EN 573-4 der Klasse A zugeordnet sind, sind die mechanischen Eigenschaften festgelegt. Die Bezeichnungen der Werkstoffzustände sind in EN 515 festgelegt.
