Die Norm umfaßt Begriffsbestimmungen, Klassifizierungsangaben der Schichten sowie die für die jeweiligen Schichtdicken zu verwendenden Zeichen. Außerdem werden Oberflächenvorbereitung, Aufbringen der Schichten sowie deren charakteristische Eigenschaften (Dicke, Aussehen, Haftfestigkeit u.a.) sowie die zum Nachweis dieser Eigenschaften festgelegten Prüfverfahren behandelt.
