Fechtsport als Kampfsportart, bei der gelegentlich (aber üblicherweise nicht absichtlich) Körperkontakt mit der Waffe auch außerhalb der Schutzzonen vorkommt, ist schon von Natur aus gefährlich. Schutzkleidung und -ausrüstung für Fechter hat zum Ziel, Verletzungen so weit wie möglich vorzubeugen, oder schlimmstenfalls den Grad der Verletzung insbesondere durch die Waffenspitze so niedrig wie möglich zu halten. Festgelegt sind daher allgemeine Anforderungen bezüglich Ergonomie, Größe, Umfang und Eigenschaften der Schutzkleidung und -ausrüstung für den Fechtsport. Anforderungen an die Kennzeichnung der Bekleidung und Ausrüstung sowie die mitzulieferenden Informationen werden ebenfalls angegeben. Prüfverfahren werden beschrieben und die Leistungsstufen definiert. Diese ÖNORM enthält die Europäische Änderung A1:2007.
