Diese ÖNORM ist für Gebäude und Gebäudeteile anzuwenden, welche dem längeren Aufenthalt von Menschen oder dem Wohnen dienen, dazu zählen insbesondere Krankenhäuser, Wohngebäude, Hotels, Schulen, Kindergärten und Bürogebäude. In dieser ÖNORM werden Anforderungen und Richtwerte für den Mindestschallschutz sowie Empfehlungen für einen erhöhten Schallschutz mit dem Ziel festgelegt, normalempfindende Menschen vor störender Luft- und Trittschallübertragung bei üblichem Verhalten zu schützen. Diese ÖNORM behandelt nicht den Schutz vor dem von einem Gebäude nach außen abgestrahlten Schall (siehe dazu ÖAL-Richtlinie 28).
