Die Norm enthält Begriffsbestimmungen, Anforderungen und Prüfbestimmungen über Sicherheitsbeschläge für Hauptschlösser von einbruchhemmenden Türen. Sie ist ungeachtet der Bauart der Türen in gleicher Weise für Beschläge von Türen im Innenausbau wie für Beschläge von Türen für besondere Zwecke (z. B. Wohnungs-, Haus- oder Geschäftseingangstüren, Strahlenschutz-, Schallschutz-, Brandschutztüren) anzuwenden, wenn diese auch einen Schutz gegen Einbruch bieten sollen. Die Norm sieht eine Fremdüberwachung aufgrund eines Überwachungsvertrages mit einer österreichischen staatlich autorisierten Prüfanstalt sowie die Kennzeichnung "ÖNORM B 5455 geprüft" vor.
