ÖNORM B 4700 dient als Grundlage für die Berechnung, Bemessung und konstruktive Durchbildung von Bauwerken und Bauteilen aus Stahlbeton. Sie gilt insbesondere für Hochbauten und verwandte Bauwerke; für alle anderen Stahlbetontragwerke (Brücken, Kranbahnen, Maste, Bohrpfähle, Schlitzwände und Tunnelinnenschalen) nur so weit, als nicht in den einschlägigen ÖNORMEN andere Regelungen getroffen sind. Sie gilt auch für die konstruktive Durchbildung insbesondere der schlaffen Bewehrung von Spannbeton-Tragwerken. Die Anwendung dieser ÖNORM setzt voraus, dass die jeweils vorgesehene Bauart hinsichtlich der Berechnung, Konstruktion und Ausführung als fachlich erprobt gilt. Bei noch nicht ausreichend erprobten Bauarten können zusätzliche Nachweise erforderlich sein.
