Um barrierefreie Tourismus- und Freizeiteinrichtungen zu errichten, sind die Bestimmungen dieser ÖNORM in Verbindung mit der ÖNORM B 1600 für Neu-, Zu- und Umbauten anzuwenden. Die ÖNORM B 1603 enthält Mindestanforderungen bzw. Grundvoraussetzungen, die über die Anforderungen der ÖNORM B 1600 hinausgehen, für Bau, Einrichtung und Ausstattung von barrierefreien Tourismuseinrichtungen wie Beherbergungsbetriebe, Gastronomiebetriebe, Kultur-, Freizeit- und Erholungseinrichtungen. Zur Erzielung des erhöhten Standards, sind alle zutreffenden, mit EA gekennzeichneten Bestimmungen einzuhalten. Bei Zu- und Umbauten bzw. Adaptierungen sind Abweichungen von dieser ÖNORM zulässig, wenn deren vollständige Einhaltung aus bautechnischen Gründen nicht möglich ist. Es wird angeregt, bestehende Bauten durch Adaptierungen den Bestimmungen dieser ÖNORM anzupassen.
