Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Bezeichnungssystem für Zähne oder Mundhöhlenbereiche mit zwei Zahlen fest. Die anatomische Anordnung im normalen Zahnbogen in Bezug auf die Mediansagittalebene und die Okklusionsebene erlaubt eine logische Unterteilung der Mundhöhle in Quadranten und Sextanten. Die erste Zahl enthält die Zahlen 1 bis 4 für die bleibenden Zähne und die Zahlen 5 bis 8 für die Milchzähne. Diese Bezeichnung erfolgt im Uhrzeigersinn und beginnt mit der oberen rechten Seite.
