Mit Hilfe dieser Norm der Reihe IEC 61850 kann das Zusammenwirken von Baueinheiten der stations- und feldbezogenen Ausrüstung unterstützt werden, indem für die Erzeugung und den Austausch konkreter Kommunikationsmitteilungen in Gestalt abstrakter Dienste und Modelle nach IEC 61850-7-2, IEC 61850-7-3 und IEC 61850-7-4 ins Einzelne gehende Informationen bereitgestellt werden. Diese Norm legt die Abbildung der Objekte und Dienste der abstrakten Schnittstelle für Kommunikationsdienste (ACSI) auf Telegramme nach ISO/IEC 8802-3 und ISO/IEC 9506 fest. Die Abbildung ermöglicht den Datanaustausch zwischen allen Arten von Baueinheiten der Stationen über lokale Netze nach ISO/IEC 8802-3.
