Diese Norm legt die Anforderungen für Schutzmaßnahmen gegen die Auswirkungen von Streuströmen fest, die durch den Betrieb von Gleichstrom-Bahnenergieversorgungssystemen verursacht werden. Da sich nach Erfahrungen über mehrere Jahrzehnte keine offensichtlichen Korrosionswirkungen durch Wechselstrom-Bahnenergieversorgungssysteme gezeigt haben und gegenwärtige Untersuchungen noch nicht abgeschlossen sind, behandelt diese Norm nur Streuströme, die durch den Betrieb von Gleichstrombahnen verursacht werden. Diese Norm gilt für alle metallenen ortsfesten Anlagen, welche Teil eines Bahnenergieversorgungssystems sind, und auch alle anderen metallenen Bauteile, die irgendwie mit dem Erdreich in Verbindung stehen und Streuströme führen können, die vom Betrieb einer Bahn verursacht werden.
