Es ist die Bezeichnung für harte Schneidstoffe (Hartmetalle, Keramiken, Diamant und Bornitrid) für die Zerspanung und deren Anwendung festgelegt. Die Norm kann nicht für andere Anwendungen wie zB Bergbau, für andere Schlagwerkzeuge und für Drahtzieh-Werkzeuge angewandt werden. Die Schneidstoffe sind in Zerspanungs-Hauptgruppen und Anwendungsgruppen eingeteilt. Die Anwendungsgruppen geben jedoch lediglich die Grenzen der Anwendung und der Bearbeitungsbedingungen an und die Hersteller selbst sind für die Einreihung ihrer harten Schneidstoffe in die Gruppe verantwortlich. Daher können Werkzeuge von verschiedenen Herstellern der gleichen Gruppe in ihren Zerspaneigenschaften voneinander abweichen.
