Diese Norm gehört zu einer Reihe von Normen über Baustoffe und Bauteile für den Mauerwerksbau und setzt die wesentlichen Anforderungen der EG-Bauproduktenrichtlinie um. Diese Norm gilt für Mauerziegel aus Ton und enthält Angaben über deren Eigenschaften und Klassifizierung. Mauerziegel werden für Mauerwerkbau, tragendes oder nichttragendes Mauerwerk einschließlich Ausfachung und Trennwänden in Gebäuden und Ingenieurbauwerken verwendet. Diese Norm gilt für alle gebrannten Mauerziegel, die bei einem Mauerwerksverband verwendet werden, einschließlich solcher von nichtrechtwinkelig parallelflächiger Form. Die Norm enthält keine Anforderungen an Pflastersteine und Schornsteinauskleidungen sowie an geschoßhohe Platten.
