Es wird die klinische Prüfung von medizinischen Geräten beschrieben. Die Norm enthält Anforderungen für die Prüfung und den dokumentarischen Nachweis darüber, ob das medizinische Gerät die vom Hersteller beabsichtigte Leistung erreicht, sowie die Anforderungen für die Bestimmung aller unter normalen Betriebsbedingungen auftretenden unerwünschten Nebenwirkungen, um so eine Beurteilung darüber zu ermöglichen, ob es tragbare Risiken in bezug auf die beabsichtigte Leistung des medizinischen Gerätes gibt.
