Der Schutz gegen Motorsägenschnitte kann durch verschiedene Funktionsprinzipien erreicht werden: -Bei Kontakt schneidet die Kette das Material nicht. -Fasern werden von der Kette in das Antriebsritzel gezogen und blockieren die Kettenbewegung. -Fasern bieten einen hohen Schnittwiderstand und absorbieren Rotationsenergie und bremsen dabei die Kettengeschwindigkeit ab. Häufig sind mehr als eines dieser Prinzipien vereint. Spezifiziert ist ein Prüfstand, der dazu dient, das Schutzniveau von Beinschutz gegen Schnitte durch handgeführte Kettensägen zu prüfen.
