Behandelt ist die Anerkennungsprüfung von Schweißern für das Schmelzschweißen von Stählen. Enthalten sind technische Regeln für eine systematische Anerkennung der Prüfung von Schweißern, so dass solche Anerkennungen unabhängig von der Art der Erzeugnisse, des Ortes und des Prüfers/der Prüfstelle allgemein akzeptiert werden können. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt auf dem Können des Schweißers, die Elektrode/die Schweißzange/den Schweißbrenner so zu handhaben, dass damit eine Schweißung von zulässiger Qualität erzeugt wird. Die Schweißprozesse, auf die sich diese Norm bezieht, schließt solche Schmelzschweißprozesse ein, die als Handschweißen oder teilmechanisches Schweißen bezeichnet werden. Sie schließt nicht die vollmechanischen und automatischen Prozesse ein.
