Die vorliegende Norm gilt für Etiketten auf Verpackungen elektronischer Bauelemente für die automatische Verarbeitung. Auf diesen Etiketten werden lineare Strichcodesymbole und zweidimensionale (2D-)Symbole angewendet. Etiketten zur direkten Produktkennung und Versandetiketten sind ausgenommen. Ebenso sind Etiketten für Verpackungen elektronischer Bauelemente, die über den Einzelhandel vertrieben werden, von dieser Norm ausgenommen.Strichcode- und 2D-Symbole werden im Allgemeinen für die automatische Erkennung und automatische Verarbeitung von Bauelementen in der Baugruppenfertigung angewendet. Die vorgesehenen Anwendungen umfassen Systeme, die selbsttätig die Überwachung von Bauelementeverpackungen während der Herstellung, Bestandsaufnahme und internen Verteilung ausführen.
