Dieser Teil von 61970 befasst sich mit dem allgemeinen Informationsmodell (CIM), einem abstrakten Modell, das alle wichtigen Objekte eines Elektrizitätsversorgungsunternehmens, die typischerweise am Betrieb einer Versorgungseinrichtung beteiligt sind, darstellt. Die im CIM dargestellten Objektklassen sind abstrakter Natur und können für eine Vielzahl von Anwendungen verwendet werden. Die Verwendung des CIM geht weit über seine Anwendung in einem EMS hinaus. Diese Norm sollte als Integrationswerkzeug verstanden werden, das in jedem beliebigen Bereich eingesetzt werden kann, in dem ein Modell für Energieversorgungssysteme zur Vereinfachung der Interoperabilität und Steckerkompatibilität zwischen Anwendungen und Systemen unabhängig von einer bestimmten Implementierung benötigt wird.
