Diese ÖVE/ÖNORM legt die allgemeinen Anforderungen an die Konstruktion, Prüfung und Kennzeichnung von elektrischen Betriebsmitteln und Ex-Bauteilen fest, die für die Verwendung in gasexplosionsgefährdeten Bereichen bestimmt sind. Sofern nicht durch einen der Teile dieser Normreihe ÖVE/ÖNORM EN 60079 geändert wird, gilt, dass dieser Norm entsprechende elektrische Betriebsmittel für die Verwendung in Bereichen bestimmt sind, in denen unter den nachfolgend aufgeführten Bedingungen des Normalklimas durch Vermischung von Luft mit Gasen, Dämpfen oder Nebeln eine Explosionsgefährdung hervorgerufen wird: . Temperatur -20 °C bis +60 °C, . Druck 80 kPa (0,8 bar) bis 110 kPa (1,1 bar) und . Luft mit normalem Sauerstoffgehalt, üblicherweise 21 % (V/V). Über die Verwendung elektrischer Betriebsmittel in Bereichen, in denen andere als die oben aufgeführten atmosphärischen Bedingungen herrschen, muss gegebenenfalls gesondert entschieden werden.
