Diese ÖNORM ist eine Grundlage für das Entwickeln und Gestalten von graphischen Symbolen zur Anwendung auf Betriebsmitteln. Derartigen Symbole dienen z. B. zur Anzeige von Funktionen sowie zur Kennzeichnung von Verbindungen und von Bauelementen. Sie enthält eine Grundfigur, die als Entwurfshilfe dienen kann, sowie Festlegungen für Linienbreiten, Winkel, Kombinationen von Symbolen. ÖNORM ISO 3461 Teil 1 ersetzt ÖNORM A 3000. Die genannte ISO-Norm ist textgleich auch als IEC 416:1988 veröffentlicht worden, wodurch eine möglichst gleichartige Gestaltung von Symbolen aller technischen Bereiche angestrebt werden soll.
