In diesem Teil der Norm ist das Verfahren für die Prüfung der Brinellhärte von metallischen Werkstoffen festgelegt. Für besondere Werkstoffe und/oder Erzeugnisse gibt es spezielle Normen (siehe Abschnitt 2). Die Brinellhärteprüfung ist in dieser Norm bis zu einer Grenze von 650 HBW festgelegt. Der normative Anhang A enthält die Werte für die Mindestdicke der Probe in Abhängigkeit von mittlerem Eindruckdurchmesser, Prüfkraft und Härte sowie Tabellen zur Bestimmung der Brinellhärte für die Prüfung an ebenen Oberflächen.
