Zweck dieser Internationalen Norm ist es, den Expositionspegel des Schießgeräusches eines Schusses an maßgeblichen Immissionsorten vorherzusagen. Hinweise werden gegeben, wie andere akustische Indizes über den Expositionspegel berechnet werden können. Die Vorhersage beruht auf der nach ISO 17201-1 gemessenen oder auf der nach ISO 17201-2 berechneten winkelabhängigen Energieverteilung des Mündungsknalls. Dieser Teil von ISO 17201 gilt für Waffen mit einem Kaliber kleiner als 20 mm, für Treibladungen von weniger als 50 g TNT-Äquivalent, schließt den Geschossknall mit ein und ist anwendbar für Entfernungen, wo der Spitzendruck geringer als 1 kPa (154 dB) ist.
