Die ÖNORM umfasst die beidseitige digitale Übermittlung von Anfragen und Ergebnissen zwischen digitalen Elektrokardiographen (EKG-carts) und heterogenen Computersystemen (hosts). In der ÖNORM werden die üblichen Konventionen dokumentiert, die für die cart-zu-host und cart-zu-chart Kommunikation von spezifischen Patientendaten, EKG-Signaldaten, EKG-Messungen und EKG-Interpretationsergebnissen benötigt werden. Diese ÖNORM legt den Inhalt und die Informationsstruktur fest, die zwischen digitalen EKG-carts und sowohl Computer-EKG-Managementsystemen als auch anderen Computersystemen, wo EKG-Daten gespeichert werden können, ausgetauscht werden. Damit wird die Kommunikation mit EKG-bezogenen Daten in einem standardisierten und interpretierbaren Format sichergestellt.
