Standards from Austria
National standards and other specifications at a glance
Austrian standards are identified as ÖNORM standards. However, numerous other standards and specifications are developed in Austria to make life easier for everybody. In many cases, they are specific to certain industries or designed for a specific purpose. Regardless of whether you need ON Rules, OVE standards or OIB guidelines: the Webshop of Austrian Standards offers you standards and specifications from Austrian publishers as well as international standards developers.
To find Austrian specifications in our Webshop, click on the logo of the relevant standard developers to go to their standards or use the search field below our logo at the top of the page.
You can obtain standards issued by the following organizations from us
Innovative know-how made in Austria
Austrian Standards International (A.S.I.) is a non-governmental organization responsible for developing standards in Austria. Austrian Standards organizes the elaboration of purely Austrian ÖNORM standards and ON Rules and co-ordinates the participation of Austrian experts in European and international standardization. Conversely, Austrian Standards is in charge of taking over European standards (EN) and international standards into the Austrian body of standards.
Standards für electrotechnical engineering and information technology
The Austrian Association for Electrical Engineering (known as OVE for short since 2016) that was already founded in 1883 is a standardization organization active in the field of electrical engineering and information technology. In its core area, i.e. electrical engineering, OVE draws up national electrotechnical standards and reference documents for Austria. OVE represents Austrian interests in international and European standardization as a member of IEC and CENELEC.
Harmonized requirements in construction engineering
The Austrian Institute of Construction Engineering (OIB) is co-ordination platform for building products and construction technology. The OIB was set up as a non-profit association by all the Austrian provinces in 1993. One of its key tasks is to co-ordinate the development and publication of guidelines and technical specifications, in particular to ensure harmonization in the construction sector.
Specifications for water, wastewater and waste management
The Austrian Water and Waste Management Association (ÖWAV) has represented the water and waste management sector in Austria since 1909. As a non-profit organization, it works towards the objectives of sustainable water, wastewater and waste management at the national and international level. One of the core tasks of ÖWAV is the development of technical specifications and practical guides in working groups. ÖWAV’s publications cover sector-specific issues from water quality to biological waste treatment.
The technical framework for gas and water supply
The Austrian Association for Gas and Water (ÖVGW) has already supported the objective of state-of-the-art supply since the 19th century. It represents the interests of its members in both industries and provides harmonized, generally recognized guidance through its specifications. ÖVGW’s portfolio comprises guidelines and communications for the water as well as the gas sector. Its harmonized specifications for gas distribution systems and customer gas installations ensure that the state of the art is applied in the day-to-day work of the sector.
Guidance on noise protection
The Austrian Association for Noise Abatement (ÖAL) was founded in 1958. Its main purpose is to ensure an interdisciplinary approach to noise. Thus, this complex issue is studied not only from a technical perspective, but also from a medical and legal viewpoint. The results of ÖAL’s work are documented and disseminated in the form of guidelines. The ÖAL guidelines are to be understood as a complement to legal and standardized requirements and do not try to compete with those rules.
Educational materials on agricultural engineering
The Austrian Council for Agricultural Engineering and Rural Development (ÖKL) is a non-profit association. As an educational platform for agriculture and rural development, ÖKL offers a great variety of educational materials. ÖKL guidelines are generally recognized, technically oriented documents of a normative nature in the fields of construction, technology and energy. ÖKL also publishes information sheets and the "Landtechnische Schriftenreihe" series.
