INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS – WHAT’S THAT?
Standards are the common language of trading partners. What are national standards (e.g. ÖNORM, DIN), European standards (EN) or international ones (ISO)? Learn more in this short video.
International standards for facilitating world trade
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, worldwide organization bringing together national standardization bodies from a total of 167 countries. Austrian Standards International is the Austrian member. ISO develops international standards in all fields except for electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunications. Thus, ISO makes a significant contribution to facilitating international trade.
Standards valid throughout Europe – the basis of the single market
The European Committee for Standardization (CEN), based in Brussels, is the platform for developing European standards (EN) in all fields – apart from electrical engineering/electronics and telecommunications. These common standards applying throughout Europe form the basis of the European single market. Therefore, the contents of European standards are identical with the exception of their language, preface and any national annexes. Austria is represented by Austrian Standards International in CEN and European standards are published as ÖNORM EN standards in Austria.
German standards – often used in the German-speaking Europe
The German Institute for Standardization (DIN) is one of the world's leading standardization organizations. Just like Austrian Standards for Austria, DIN organizes the integration of international standards into the national body of standards. Most DIN standards are also available as ÖNORM standards.
International standards especially for the electrotechnical field
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the counterpart of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) in the electrotechnical and electronic field. IEC has more than 170 member countries worldwide and offers globally applying standards in its field of activities. Some standards are also developed jointly with ISO.
European standards in the field of electrical engineering & electronics
The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) is based in Brussels and develops European standards in the electrotechnical and electronic field. The Austrian member of CENELEC is our partner OVE, and the European electrotechnical standards are published as OVE EN standards in Austria.
Electrotechnical standards from Germany
The German Commission for Electrotechnical, Electronic & Information Technologies (DKE) is the German counterpart of the Austrian Electrotechnical Association (OVE). DKE is a body of the VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies) and develops for VDE and DIN standards and safety requirements for electrical, electronic and information technologies. DIN VDE standards are available in our webshop.

Standards from the Swiss Confederation
The Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV) is the national standardization organization of Switzerland and is responsible for Swiss standards. The standards published by SNV are identified by the designation SN. SNV is a full member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). Transposed European standards (EN) account for roughly 90% of the total of almost 17,000 SNV standards.
Technical know-how made in Germany
With around 135,000 personal members, the Association of German Engineers (VDI) is the biggest technical-scientific association of Germany and provides important inputs for new technologies and technical solutions. VDI standards contain recommendations and rules. They describe the recognized state of the art, for example, in automotive, medical and process engineering.
British standards especially for Commonwealth countries
Being the world's first national standardization organization and having more than 120 years of experience, British Standards Institution (BSI) has a global presence with its standards, especially in the Commonwealth countries. Since the United Kingdom left the EU in 2021, it does not have to comply with the EU’s rules and obligations anymore. However, BSI continues to be a member of the European organizations CEN and CENELEC.
Global standards for testing & analysis procedures
ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) is a global standards developer headquartered in the USA. Its work focuses on the development of standardized analytical and test methods (e.g. in the field of materials, products, systems and services).
High-tech standards in the field of electrical & information technology
The US Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) develops standards for high-tech applications in the electrical and IT industries (e.g. for wireless communication, intelligent transportation, Industry 4.0). With more than 400,000 members in over 160 countries, the IEEE is the biggest technical professional organization worldwide.
European standards for information and communication technologies
The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is the standardization organization recognized by the European Union for the fields of telecommunications, broadcasting and other electronic communications networks and services. ETSI has a funding model differing from the one of most standardization organizations: While ETSI makes available current standards free of charge, participation in standardization is subject to a fee. In the Webshop of Austrian Standards, only withdrawn ETSI standards are available as hard copies – and therefore for a fee.
Current ETSI standards are accessible here.
Standards and measurement methods related to light
The Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) – or International Commission on Illumination in English – is an independent standardization organization based in Vienna. The CIE develops and publishes standards and measurement methods related to light and illumination. They cover everything from glare resulting from street and vehicle lighting to the optical safety of infrared eye trackers. The organization officially co-operates with ISO, IEC and CEN.
