Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Regina Sommer is a professor habilitated in water and food hygiene at the Medical University of Vienna and heads the Water Hygiene Unit at the Institute for Hygiene and Applied Immunology. In her work, she focuses on water quality and health. Her field of activities ranges from hygiene requirements for drinking water and technical and medical water applications (e.g. haemodialysis) to therapy pools and cooling towers as well as bathing waters and wastewater. In addition to her teaching and research activities, the graduate food scientist and biotechnologist established an accredited testing laboratory for hygiene at the Medical University of Vienna and, in co-operation with the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, AIT and Vienna Water, set up the Water Test Centre Wiental. Moreover, Sommer is an expert pursuant to the Food Safety Act and the Consumer Protection Act, chairs the Codex Commission on Drinking Water and is a member of the expert panel on bathing water hygiene (the latter two within the framework of the health division of the Federal Ministry for Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Consumer Protection).
Regina Sommer represents Austria on the European Microbiological Expert Group (EMEG) of the European Commission and is a member or convenor of working groups of Austrian Standards and ISO. She takes pleasure in joint technical work and is committed to and enthusiastic about her field of specialization and the dissemination of knowledge. For Regina Sommer who is also a member of the Presidential Council of Austrian Standards, standards are an essential national as international tool for achieving and verifying quality.
