Austrian Standards

What we make possible

Standardisation makes many things possible that would otherwise be difficult to achieve:

  • Designing General Frameworks
By participating in the development of standards, the experts of a specific field define what is economically reasonable, technically and environmentally practicable and appropriate. In dialogue with other interest groups, they design the general framework of their enterprise/organisation and their economic sector.
  • Economic Growth
International studies prove: Standards contribute about 25 per cent to economic growth – more than patents and licenses together. Their portion of  GDP is 1,74 Billion Euro solely in Austria (2000).
  • Expansion of  Markets
European and International standards surpass borders. They ease the access to new markets. European standards are one of the cornerstones for the implementation of the Single European Market. They eliminate different national requirements and verification procedures for products and services.
  • Spreading Knowledge
What is recorded as a standard is the standard, the technological status quo. Knowledge and experience documented in standards are available for everybody. Recent scientific developments find their way into economic practice with the help of standards.
  • Communication
Standardised terms and definitions provide clarity and comprehensibility. Standards are the language of the international economy – not only in a technical context. Standards simplify communication across fields of expertise and national borders.
  • Competition
Unitary standards create unitary conditions for all market participants. They provide fairness in competition and equal entrance requirements and are therefore the foundation of the free market economy.
  • Innovation
Standards define what is „State-of-the-Art“ or „Code-of-good-Practice“ - not only in  technical areas. Hence, they provide the safe base from which advancement and innovation is possible.
  • Safety
Standards make business and everyday life safer. They support the use of safety and protection requirements – in business and everyday life. They help to eliminate dangers and ease the implementation of efficient work safety and environmental protection. Furthermore, they establish confidence in business relations.
