Austrian Standards

Milestones

Standardisation is part of the human culture. Since time immemorial, mankind has tried to simplify their everyday life and work by unification and standardisation.

Standardisation as we know and use it today, was born during the industrial revolution of the 19th century. The trading of goods, increased trading of industrial products, the development of  transportation systems and new machinery have both supported and required standardisation for simplification purposes.

In 1901, the British Standards Institution was founded as the first national institute of standardisation. In 1917, in the middle of the First World War, the DIN was developed in Germany.

The young Republic of Austria began in 1920.
